A noise nuisance – is it antisocial behaviour?

We wouldn’t usually consider these noises to be antisocial behaviour:

• general living sounds
• footsteps
• children playing
• babies crying
• DIY
• one-off events or parties
• loud music
• neighbours shouting or arguing
• groups making noise in communal areas

However, persistent noise between the hours of 11pm and 7am could be considered as antisocial behaviour.

It must occur regularly and continue over a time – it is not enough for the noise to be annoying or disturbing.

If your neighbour is causing problems, we recommend talking to them as soon as possible about anything they are doing that’s affecting you. This is often the best way to sort out any issues.

If the behaviour keeps happening, the situation worsens or you feel that you or someone else is at risk, please contact the police online or by calling 999.

Once you have a criminal reference number, please get in touch with our customer service centre by calling 0300 456 9996 to report the incident.

You should also report a noise nuisance to your local council. To find out more about how councils deal with noise nuisance complaints, visit the Government website.

You can also download the Noise App to report a noise nuisance.
